The Acculis MTA System is indicated for the coagulation of soft tissue. It is CE Marked and FDA 510k cleared. It is currently available on a restricted commercial distribution to 14 centers around the world. A full commercial release of the system is anticipated in early 2009. The system delivers fast, precise and controlled volume coagulation zones and supersedes RFA technology in the open surgery setting.
The Sulis V control unit
The Sulis V control unit generates the microwave energy and controls its delivery to the applicator. The surgeon selects the power level required up to 100W and the time in seconds that he wants the microwave applied for. Often the surgeon will use several small bursts of energy to precisely and completely coagulate the area of tissue targeted MTA.

The Accu5i applicator
The Accu5i applicator is specially designed for use in open surgical procedures. The applicator has a biocompatible non stick coating. The microwave energy is passed from the Sulis V control unit down the microwave cable into the applicator. The energy emerges through the special cylinder at the tip of the applicator. The design of the applicators ensures that the energy is deposited very efficiently into the tissue around the cylinder. This results in very rapid heating in that area and the creation of an increasing sphere of dead tissue.
The surgeon may use the optional temperature probes to monitor the temperature of key vessels near the area to be coagulated or to confirm when the heating zone has reached the volume required.
Each sterile pack will contain the following:
- 5.6 mm applicator
- 2 Temperature probes
Accu5i applicator Product Specification:
- Single-use, sterile, disposable instrument
- Integral 2.5 meter microwave cable and connector for connection to the Sulis V Control Unit
- Placement using ultrasound or other imaging guidance
- Each applicator may be used to coagulate up to 10 separate areas of target tissue for each patient.
- Available in two sizes: Surgical 17 and Surgical 33, with usable lengths of 17.4 cm and 33.4 cm, respectively.
- Shaft diameter is 5.6 mm.
- MTA Temperature Probe - single-use, sterile, disposable instrument used to monitor the temperature of adjacent tissues, vital structures, ducts, vessels, or nerves.
- Temperature probes are 18 gauge (1.27 mm) stainless steel, incorporate integral 2.7 m cables, and are available in 20 cm or 33 cm lengths.
